To Infinity and Beyond

One of my favorite children’s movies is Toy Story. The main characters are Andy’s toys, and the plot revolves around them. A new toy, Buzz Lightyear, is added to the mix. Buzz believes he can fly, his light is an actual laser, and he’s on earth to protect the planet. Woody, Andy’s favorite plaything, tries to convince the high tech robot that he’s only a toy, but Buzz is determined to stick to his mission. Even though later in the movie Buzz realizes he’s a toy, the special gadgets with which he was made help all the other toys in the end. Buzz never stops shouting his battle cry, “To infinity and beyond!”

Sadly for Buzz, some of you reading this devotion either may never have heard of him or you may have forgotten all about him. His battle cry is mute without a remembrance of him. There is One, however, who can assertively proclaim that cry. Psalm 102:12 says, “But You, O LORD, shall endure forever, and the remembrance of Your name to all generations” (NKJ). No matter how pagan our society seems to be becoming, the Bible is clear that God’s name will be remembered by our offspring, and by theirs, and by theirs, and on and on eternally.

Just as it happened in Toy Story when Buzz Lightyear was added to the collection of toys, new Christians will be continually added to the family of God. Just as Woody told Buzz he was now one of Andy’s toys, it’s our job to let our children and new believers know they are a part of an elite collection. They are God’s. All they have brought with them, although just gadgets in their own hands, are gifts that can be used for the Master’s service. “His mercy is on those who fear Him,” says Luke1:50 (NKJ), “from generation to generation”—to infinity and beyond.
