The Big Payback

Do you remember when you were a kid and someone got away with doing something to you that you didn’t like? You probably yelled something like, “I’m gonna get you for that!” You then went about for days and days plotting and planning as to how you were going to pull off the big payback for whatever had been perpetrated upon you. You expended lots of mental energy thinking through each possible scenario until you came up with the perfect plan so your enemy would know she was suffering because of her actions toward you. She had it coming.

Unlike us, God is not vindictive in His retribution; He’s simply acting out of either His justice or His mercy. The payback you receive from Him depends upon your response to Him. Consider Romans 2:6-11:

  • [God] …will render to each one according to his deeds: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness– indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God. (NKJ)

God is not up in His heaven pacing back and forth, pounding His right fist in His left hand, gritting His teeth, and seething about how He plans to get us back for all the wrong we’ve done toward Him. He’s not plotting and planning as He hisses, “I’m gonna get you for that!” To the contrary, through the sacrificial and atoning death of His very own Son, Jesus Christ, God’s mercy has reached out to us to payback blessing for our evil. “To each according to his deeds…to everyone who works what is good,” the big payback is eternal life, glory, honor, and peace. The payback of indignation, wrath, tribulation, and anguish—paid from the account of justice—is the alternate payment meted out “on every soul of man who does evil.”

There will be a big payback for both the evil and the good. Here’s the question: which pay-out group are you in?
